Just In Time For Valentine's Day: The Smoky Eye 4 Ways

Written by

If you only master one makeup look in time for Valentine's Day, you may as well make it a smokin' hot one. Here's how to get your take-me-to-bed eyes on, in less time than it takes your Nan to darn a pair of tights.

Dramatic | Gucci

Get the look: You want slept-in, morning-after smudge, so down the tools and use your ring finger to shade the product, starting from the inner corner creating a winged-finish. Ditch the powder shadows and keep your eyes peeled for a creme or mousse shadow for the same wet-looking finish. Try: Chanel Illusion D'Ombre, $48, that boasts just the right amount of shimmer to stop the shadow from looking too Goth.

Smudged | Alexander Wang

Get the look: A little charcoal, a tad mossy, a whole lot wearable, the more shadows you throw into the mix, the merrier. The trick to keeping it subtle is to apply the green or grey-tones first, then follow with a black shadow to knock the colour back a notch or two.

Metallic | Emilio Pucci

So you're planning on meeting Mr Money Bags? Go for gold with a wash of metallic concentrated on the centre of the lid - the hit of shimmer bounces light off the skin to make the eyes pop, before smudging black liner along the outer corners and lower lash line. Then, pack a nude gloss in your clutch for touch ups throughout the night.

Contoured | Lanvin

The shy girls guide to the smokey eye, take baby steps with an antiquey-gold number smudged up to the crease line. Ditch the black liner and use a cotton tip to smudge any excess shadow below the lash line for the same intentional-looking fallout. Finish with a hit of highlighter down the centre of the nose, the top of the cheekbone and the cupids bow to place up the skin in all the right places.
